IITs are kind of Talent Hub!

Recently, while I was on my evening walk near my house a very young guy asked me, “You went to IIT, right? And then you became a Chemical Engineer. How was that?”

I was wondering, “How does this kid living in suburban Kochi know about IIT?”. I would not have been surprised at all in Bangalore or Hyderabad since there are a ton of IITians.

So I asked,  how do you know about IIT?”

“It is pretty well known. They are supposed to produce some really smart guys.”

Needless to say, I was quite flattered and did not want to disabuse him of that notion :)

But I wish one day IITs are known for rolling out technologies that the world can't live without. After all, there is a ‘T’ in IIT. That remains a distant dream. As a student I did not contribute much to that (after my 3-4 yrs of short journey as Process Engineer), and I am no one to preach.

In short, IITs are considered a talent hub rather than an innovation hub.

Should we try to change that? I think the answer is pretty obvious.
